Keller ISD will hold a calendar hearing at 5:30 p.m., Jan. 17 in the Rock Gym located at the Keller ISD administration building. The purpose of the hearing is to discuss the findings of the district's calendar survey and to garner public input regarding the application for an early start waiver.

Keller ISD traditionally begins school in early August. This year, school began on Aug. 8, and according to the public survey held in December 2005, more than 60 percent of the 3,254 respondents favored beginning school before Aug. 21, 2006.

During the 2001 Texas Legislative Session, lawmakers passed new legislation stating that school districts may only begin instruction for the school year during or after the week of Aug. 21. However, this law allows districts to apply to the Texas Education Agency (TEA) for a waiver regarding the first day of instruction. The state indicates that if there is community support, it will grant waivers. School districts are told to measure community support by having a community forum and sending the comments to the state.

Keller ISD is planning to apply for a waiver to allow school to begin on Aug. 9, 2006.

Frequently Asked Questions
 (pdf version)

As a fast growth district, the Keller Independent School district serves an additional 1600-2000 new students each school year. To accommodate this growth and continue to offer a high quality education for all our students, the district has been on a rotating bond schedule in order to construct new schools to accommodate such phenomenal growth.

With this growth comes the need to modify existing school boundaries. Over the next few years boundary changes will impact thousands of students in the district.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Keller ISD has decided to remain open for classes, and a decision to cancel Thursday's classes hasn't been made. As of now, our class schedule remains unchanged. However, administrators continue to monitor the weather conditions related to this winter storm.

In the event that it becomes necessary to close our schools, parents may obtain up-to-the-minute information regarding closures from the Keller ISD website at www.kellerisd.net.

Once a decision is made to close campuses, district personnel will also contact area media outlets, including WBAP 820 AM. The decision to close our schools is made between 5:30 and 6 a.m.

Students’ safety is our most important concern. The normal procedure in the district is not to close schools early once students are in attendance. District officials will continuously monitor weather conditions. If weather conditions make it necessary for the Northwest ISD to close schools, parents and students are advised to listen to the radio or television for a current news report. No announcements will be made when schools are to remain open.

Information regarding school closings will be posted as soon as possible on the following venues:

With the start of the 2005-06 school year only a few days away, it’s time to ensure your child’s immunizations are up to date.

The Fort Worth Public Health Department strives to keep residents informed about the latest immunization laws so that your child can enter the upcoming school year healthy and hassle-free.

Public Health reminds residents that a new law effective Sept. 1 requires that children attending child-care centers and enrolled in early childhood programs be vaccinated against invasive pneumococcal and hepatitis A diseases.

Pneumococcal Vaccine

The pneumococcal vaccine is required for all children age 2 months through 59 months attending child-care facilities and pre-kindergarten programs.

Hepatitis A Vaccine

Children in child-care centers and pre-kindergarten programs who are 24 months or older will need two doses of hepatitis A vaccine given six to 18 months apart.

Hepatitis B & Varicella Immunizations

Also new this year for school-age children are expanded requirements for hepatitis B and varicella immunizations.

  • Kindergarten-11th grade: hepatitis B vaccine before school begins
  • Kindergarten-fifth & seventh-11th grades: Varicella vaccine before school begins.

The bond election passed with a resounding victory for proposition 1 and proposition 2. With the bond's passage, three new schools will be built within and around the Woodland Springs community.
