These local homeowners are making a very personal effort to assist the victims of hurricane Katrina. We received the following letter on September 1st and have received permission to re-print it here. The need in Dallas/Fort Worth alone has risen to 15,000 to 25,000 homeless people. If you would like to make a very personal contribution, please read this letter:
URGENT CALL FOR HELP
September 1, 2005
Friends and Neighbors,
We have a been presented with a unique opportunity to help about 300 refugees from the New Orleans area that are being housed 5 and 6 to a room at the Ballpark La Quinta in Arlington.
These families have arrived with little more than a duffel bag and have nothing to return home to. The manager at the La Quinta is allowing us to bring in clothing, toys and snack items to distribute directly to the families.
We need gently used toys, games, dolls, stuffed animals, baby supplies and clothing for kids, teens and adults, toiletries, unopened snacks and juice boxes, school supplies and diapers. The manager specifically mentioned men's and boy's socks and underwear, diapers and gift cards to Walmart. They are also in desperate need of prepaid phone calling cards to find and contact their families. We will transport all the collected items to the La Quinta and separate it out for distribution directly to these needy families on the morning of Saturday, September 3.
Please place your contributions on either of our porches by 8pm Friday, September 2. Sorry for the short notice. Call either of us if you have any questions, need directions or can facilitate your own neighborhood donation point. Jennifer's cell phone number is 817-966-3539. Toni's cell phone is 817-721-6976.
Thank you so much. Together we can supply these families with the basic necessities they need to support their families.

I am happy to report tonight that the Bass Family coordinated the hurricane relief efforts and offered their garage as a drop-off site for today's donations. Our community is fortunate to have Jennifer Bass and family encouraging such generosity in our community. I thank them for all their efforts today, especially in the blazing heat.
Residents of VOWS supported this endeavor by dropping off their donations throughout the day and into the night. Then, neighbors sorted, packaged and labeled all the contributions into the late evening hours. The transport truck arrived and was then loaded by homeowners who waited or arrived to help complete the project. The caravan will leave in the early morning hours to deliver the clothing and supplies to fellow displaced Americans staying in Arlington.
Also, Carlton Powell provided an alternative drop-off location for the donations to aid the hurricane-displaced families on the west corridor. I appreciate families coming together to help this evening.
I hope to have pictures to share with the Advisory Committee and fellow homeowners via the community website. Please extend a warm thank you to everyone involved in this effort.
Hats off to the Bass Family...Jennifer, Wade, Spencer, and Mason - It is a pleasure to have you as neighbors. See you in the morning.
